Abstract

The simple act of washing hands with soap gives a significant health advantage. In the past five years, it has been recognized that hand washing with soap provides health benefits beyond reducing diarrhoeal disease. An intervention was organized so that military recruits in a US training facility were encouraged to wash their hands 5 times a day. The 44,000 recruits were split into intervention and control groups. The program involved education, provision of hand washing materials and a relaxation of rules; for example, sinks did not have to be wiped dry after hand washing.
